Feline chronic gingivostomatitis (FCGS) is a severe immune-mediated oral mucosal inflammatory disease that affects cats. It is characterized by chronic inflammation of the gums, mouth, and throat, causing significant discomfort and pain.

Misnomer of the Term "Faucitis"

The term "faucitis" is incorrectly used to describe FCGS. By definition, the fauces refer to a specific region in the throat, while FCGS affects the entire oral cavity.

Studies have demonstrated that acute caudal stomatitis, sometimes mistakenly called faucitis, can be induced experimentally. However, this condition is distinct from FCGS and involves inflammation limited to the back of the mouth.
